Smart cities: digital cities of the future

26.06.2024

AI and digitalization are also buzzwords when it comes to the cities of tomorrow – the development of smart cities. They are based on the use of intelligent data networks that are intended to modernize specific areas such as mobility, energy, administration and education.

You no longer need to travel to Asia to see examples of modern urban development. In this country too, cities and municipalities are increasingly investing in intelligent solutions and technologies to rethink infrastructure and thus improve people’s quality of life.

According to the Smart City Index 2023, Munich ranks first among German smart cities with its digital concepts, closely followed by Hamburg and Cologne. There are major differences in the speed and strengths of the cities. Berlin, for example, pursues advanced mobility concepts, but is only ranked 24th out of 81. In contrast, cities in Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria score particularly well, with university and technology locations leading the way.

Whether digital literacy in schools or pilot projects such as teleoperated driving and PrioBike pillars – there are many innovative concepts.[1] The aim now should be to disseminate tried-and-tested solutions on a large scale in order to implement further digital projects more quickly. What digitalization is based on are smart electronic components manufactured using high-precision SMT stencils. We are excited to see what other smart concepts Photocad will be able to help shape in the future.

[1] Teleoperated driving here refers to a model project of a car sharing service in Hamburg in which electric cars are driven remotely to the desired pick-up location. The first PrioBike column in Hamburg calculates an individual speed recommendation for each cyclist in order to reach the green phase.
